TEACHER HOW-TO NOTES:
This was created using public domain etext through the K-12 Virtual library, selecting Books from the main menu.

In the Books menu, selecting Literature.Org -The classics. Then choosing the very first author "AESOP" and clicking to view his etext stories. Scroll through the stories and find the DOG AND THE SHADOW. Click to read the story. Copy and paste the text of the story into PowerPoint or another presentation program.

TIP: You could use a word processor and then highlight vocabulary words and print a copy for each child in class.

Next you need a picture.. where I went to Project Gutenberg to visit their AESOP section because it contained illustrations in the public domain. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/18732/18732-h/18732-h.htm. Copy and past the illustrations into PowerPoint.

Next you need audio files. A visit to AT&T's text to speech project will allow you to copy and paste text and generate a wav audio file. http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php - you will need to SAVE each audio file before you can insert it into PowerPoint.

In PowerPoint, Click on Insert, Movies and Sounds, and select INSERT SOUND FROM FILE. Choose the location of your sound file. A box will appear and you can select to (A) have the sound file play automatically or (b) to play after the sound icon is clicked. Having sound files allows a child to revisit the story and have it read to them. Note: Computer text to speach is very good -but cannot yet match the inflections of a human voice.

Save your PowerPoint with audio files in the same directory- you must keep them together for the sounds to work.

Next, I used Camtasia Studio to record the playing PowerPoint with audio files and distribute to the web. Camstasia is software made by Techsmith a multimedia company in Michigan.
